Piano Benches and Stools

How you sit at the piano is very important to help you develop your technique. Sitting uncomfortably and crucially, at the wrong height, makes learning to play much more awkward than it should be. It’s important to invest in something decent to get the most out of your hard work practicing.

Here’s what you need:

  • An Adjustable Stool This is a must to get the right height for you
  • Padding A good amount of padding helps with those longer sessions
  • Width You need a wider stool for stability (Over 50cm)

The 2 main options when it comes to piano stools are the classic style bench and the portable cross braced stools. You can also get much more pricey hydraulic stools. (See Amazon’s selection)

Portable Stools

These are usually the most affordable and practical option for a lot of people. Easy to fold away when you need or carry to a gig. All though, it’s good to have a setup that stays put at home so you can get practicing without a fuss.

Not all the same options seem to be readily available in the US and Europe so I have some separate suggestions depending on where you are. I would avoid just going for the cheapest thing you find as there’s a chance you may end up with something rickety and unstable.

Classic Piano Benches

I recommend taking a look at the Roland range of piano benches available. There’s not too much point in me suggesting a specific one because they’re all high quality and this will be down to personal preference. There’s a variety of designs, colours and some come with storage (they’re a bit more £££). Just remember to go for an adjustable bench!
